Lucky for me I was singled out by my first sales trainer as the least likely to succeed.

It was the late 1960’s and I had just been hired for my very first real job as an advertising sales rep with a major broadcasting company, so off I went to the Big Apple for some serious training.

Our final exam was to stand up in front of my fellow trainees and our instructor (I think his name was Mr. Brown) and make a sales presentation.

I don’t think Mr. Brown liked mine.  He sent a written evaluation to my boss telling him that I was the one from the class least likely to succeed in sales.  My manager shared that with me, and to my surprise, he didn’t fire me on the spot.

That became one of the defining moments of my business life.  From that day forward I vowed to prove Mr. Brown wrong and my loyal boss right.  I made a decision to become an expert in sales…to study, learn, practice and execute like a pro.

I decide to make an investment in me.  I  read every book and listened to every tape I could find about sales.  I attended seminars, watched every video and role-played with myself every sales scenario I could think of.  I was determined never to be embarrassed again.

Some 40 years later and a career as a successful salesperson, Sales Manager and General Manager in the radio industry, I still stick with what I did way back then:  I study something new every day.

I have always made it my business to learn everything possible about what I’m doing,and more importantly to learn everything possible about the people I manage and the clients I serve.
